Citizen Wong

Come learn about Wong Chin Foo (1847-1898), the first Asian American civil rights leader. “Wong defied stereotypes and showed all immigrants and refugees that we belong here in this country. He fought for equality when Asians were seen as unassimilable,” says Richard Chang, Citizen Wong's playwright and actor. 

Solo performances of Citizen Wong are followed by panel discussions with Bay Area Asian American scholars, historians, and activists. On September 16, 2024, SFSU will host Citizen Wong at Library Rm 121 11am -12:15pm. A discussion of Asian American Civic Engagement and Exclusion: Past, Present and Future features:

"Chinese American Collective Action in the 19th and 20th centuries" by Russell Jeung, PhD (SFSU Professor of Asian American Studies and co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate) 

"Racial profiling of Chinese Americans in the name of National Security" by Joyce Xi (Photographer and Activist)

Moderated by Eric Mar, (former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, SFSU Emeritus Professor, Asian American Studies)

On September 20, 2024 7pm-9pm, SFSU and Chinese Historical & Cultural Project will co-host Citizen Wong at County of Santa Clara Board Chambers (70 W. Hedding Street, San Jose) Panelists will discuss Chinese immigrants' experiences in the 19th Century to present:

Russell Jeung, PhD (SFSU Professor of Asian American Studies and co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate)

Connie Young Yu (local historian and Chinese railroad worker descendant)

Vivien Leung, PhD (Santa Clara University, Professor of Political Science)

Moderated by Paul Fong (former CA State Assemblymember, DeAnza & Evergreen Colleges Professor of Political Science, and SJSU Asian American Studies faculty)

On September 22, 2024 2pm-4pm, SFSU and Chinese Historical & Cultural Project will co-host Citizen Wong at the Saratoga Public Library (13650 Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga)Panelists will discuss Chinese immigrants' experiences in the 19th Century to present(Event recorded by Douglas Ross, a videographer on the creative team):
